PTCOG Brownfield Redevelopment Program

The PTCOG Brownfield Redevelopment Program facilitates redevelopment of brownfields.

WHAT IS A BROWNFIELD?
A "brownfield" is any property where redevelopment is complicated by the presence or potential presence of environmental contamination. These can be abandoned buildings, vacant lots, former commercial or manufacturing sites, or other types of property.

WHAT IS THE BROWNFIELDS REDEVELOPMENT PROGRAM?
The Piedmont Triad Council of Governments Brownfield Redevelopment Program receives funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The mission is to facilitate the identification, assessment, cleanup, and beneficial redevelopment of brownfields.

Currently, PTCOG is working with the City of Lexington in Davidson County and the Cities of Eden and Reidsville in Rockingham County in coordination with other neighborhood improvement efforts of the City government, other governmental agencies, and the private sector.

WHAT CAN THE BROWNFIELDS REDEVELOPMENT PROGRAM DO FOR YOU?
The program offers qualified landowners and developers:

  • Free environmental site assessments on sites within Reidsville, Lexington and Eden;
  • Assistance with participation in the NC Brownfield Program or  State Voluntary Cleanup Program;
  • Assistance in locating and applying for funding for clean up activities;
  • Coordination among local, state and federal government agencies; and
  • Placement of each site or project on the PTCOG brownfields website.

The site assessments are funded by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grants awarded to the PTCOG.   Property owners or prospective purchasers may apply for acceptance of their properties into the program.

WHAT PROPERTIES ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE BROWNFIELDS REDEVELOPMENT PROGRAM?
There are several requirements for eligibility, including the following. The applicant must:

  • Sites must be located in Reidsville, Lexington, or Eden;
  • Must be a prospective buyer or developer;
  • Must have access to the site;
  • Not have contributed to the contamination at the site; and
  • Allow PTCOG to designate the property as a brownfield.
