Community Advisory Committees

 

This program is the result of legislation passed by the North Carolina General Assembly. In passing this legislation it was the intent of the general Assembly that each community in the state should take an active role in promoting the interests and well-being of all residents of Nursing Homes and Adult Care Homes. Adult Care Homes include Family Care Homes (FCH) - serving 2-6 residents - and Adult Care Homes (ACH) - serving 7 or more residents.

Each county in North Carolina that has one or more Nursing Homes is now served by a Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee (NHCAC). Each county having one or more Adult Care Homes is required to establish an Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee (ACHCAC) to serve all such homes in the county.

In smaller counties, these committees may be combined and are called Joint Community Advisory Committees (NH/ACHJCAC). County Commissioners make these appointments with input from interested parties. The committees are comprised of volunteers who are committed to quality care in all Nursing and Adult Care Homes.

The North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services, through a network of Regional Ombudsmen, provides the committees with training and gives professional assistance in the performance of their duties.

What Is the Purpose of These Committees?

To resolve grievances or problems pertaining to Nursing Home and Adult Care Home Residents’ Rights at the local level.

To serve as the nucleus for increased community involvement with long-term care facilities and their residents.

To promote community education and awareness of the needs of the institutionalized elderly.
