Alzheimer’s/Dementia Care Units

This type of care is designed to address the special needs of individuals who have a diagnosis of dementia (or the most common form of dementia called Alzheimer’s Disease). Alzheimer’s/Dementia care can be provided in a special unit within a facility or a free standing community designed to sensitively care for those with Alzheimer’s or other memory-related disorders. This type of care provides a secure environment to prevent wandering from the facility. The units are generally designed with keypad entry/exit or a similar security system. Some units provide care for all stages of dementia and some also provide Hospice care. The actual level of care for these units may be either Adult Care Home (Assisted Living) or Skilled Nursing (Nursing Home). Adult Care Homes providing Alzheimer’s/Dementia care are designed for individuals who need minimal to moderate assistance with personal care needs, but who may be at risk for wandering or experiencing behavioral problems as a result of memory impairment. Staff are available 24 hours a day. Nursing Homes providing Alzheimer’s/Dementia care are designed for individuals who require 24 hour care according to a physician and need the supervision and/or assessment of a nurse for up to 8 hours a day.
