Family Caregiver Support Program
Completing the Care
Family caregivers are the backbone of the long-term care system!
Without any training, they become medical assistants, lawyers, chauffeurs, chefs, translators, and personal assistants for their loved ones. Family caregivers provide more than twice the amount of services provided by medical professionals while still supporting full lives of their own with spouses, children, and careers. Juggling the many responsibilities often causes stress, depression, anger, poor physical health, and neglect of the caregiver’s own care.
As a result of the toll caregiving can take, the Federal government created the National Family Caregiver Support Program. This program provides formal assistance to support unpaid caregivers in their endeavors to provide for their loved ones. Providing information to caregivers about available services, assisting caregivers in accessing those services, counseling, support groups, training, and respite care are included in the services provided by the Family Caregiver Support Program.
To be eligible for these services, one must be a caregiver of an adult with neurological or organic brain dysfunction or a caregiver of someone age 60 and older. Grandparents or relatives that are at least 55 years of age or older and caring for a young child or an adult with mental and developmental disabilities are also eligible.
